Circular Saws Training

1. General Safety Guidelines

  • Work Area Maintenance: Keep the area clean and free of unneeded tools and materials. Ensure the floor is not slippery due to sawdust.

  • Personal Safety:

    • Wear safety goggles and hearing protection.

    • Wear a mask to minimize sawdust inhalation.

    • Avoid loose clothing or jewelry that could get caught in moving parts.

  • Positioning:

    • Avoid standing directly behind the saw blade to minimize the risk of kickback.

    • Listen to the motor; a distinctive sound may indicate a blade binding, which could foreshadow a kickback event.

2. SawStop Table Saw

Prerequisites

Safety Considerations

  • Blade and Equipment Checks:

    • Ensure the correct blade is installed; no dado blades are allowed.

    • Verify that the blade is sharp; dull blades may generate smoke or scorch the wood and put a strain on the motor.

    • Check if the blade insert is level.

  • Area and Body Positioning:

    • Ensure the saw’s immediate area is clear of obstacles.

    • Keep fingers out of the red zone surrounding the blade while it is rotating.

    • Avoid wearing loose clothing or metal jewelry that could contact the blade.

    • Keep metal tools like tape measures or squares away from the rotating blade.

    • Avoid standing directly behind the blade to reduce the risk of injury from kickback.

Recommended Operating Procedures

Turning the Saw On:

  • Open the dust removal gate.

  • Flip the red paddle to the OFF position.

  • Turn the yellow toggle switch to the ON position. Wait for the LEDs to indicate the saw is ready for use (solid green LED, red LED off).

Blade Use:

  • Wet wood, wood glue, or pressure-treated wood may trigger the brake cartridge.

  • Always use the blade guard, riving knife (splitter), and other safety features as appropriate.

  • Keep fingers outside the red-painted area around the blade.

  • Use a miter gauge, feather board, push stick, or push board to maintain control.

Precision Adjustments:

  • Use a digital angle gauge for exact cuts.

  • Use a work support for long or heavy stock.

  • Ensure the elevation and tilt locking knobs are properly adjusted.

Troubleshooting:

  • Report any issues to the Maintenance Team.

3. Compound Miter Saw

Prerequisites

Safety Guidelines

  • Workpiece Handling:

    • Use clamps to support the workpiece whenever possible.

    • If supporting by hand, keep hands outside the ‘NO HAND’ area.

    • Never cross your hand over the line of cut.

  • Usage Limitations:

    • This saw is for cutting wood only; do not use it to cut metal.

    • Never feed a workpiece into the blade; it must remain stationary.

    • Clamped workpieces should be flat; avoid cutting bowed or warped pieces by hand.

    • Avoid cutting multiple workpieces simultaneously to prevent binding and kickback.

  • Blade Operation:

    • Let the blade reach full speed before making a cut.

    • Allow the blade to come to a complete stop before raising it and removing the workpiece.

Use and Adjustments

  • Sliding Fence: Remove when performing extreme bevel cuts or most compound cuts.

  • Depth of Cut: The depth is set for full-depth cuts; use the SawStop for non-through cuts.

  • Do Not Adjust: The miter detent system, bevel stops, or bevel lock tensioning should not be altered. Contact the maintenance team if adjustments are needed.
