Grizzly Jointer Training

1. Overview

  • Purpose: The Grizzly Jointer is designed to remove material to create a flat surface on one side of a board. For creating a parallel side, using the Planer is recommended.

2. Safety Guidelines

  • Eye Protection: Required for all users.

  • Blade Speed: Allow the blade to reach full speed before feeding material through.

  • Hand Safety:

    • Never hook your thumb or fingers over the end of the board. Use a push stick to avoid injuries during kickback.

    • When guiding wood, push into the fence, not downwards. Pushing down can cause your hand to slip into the blade.

  • Reporting Issues:

    • If the Jointer is not functioning properly, report it to the Monitor on Duty, unplug the device, and place an 'Out of Order' sign on it.

    • Notify the Maintenance Team, and the Jointer will be unavailable until it is certified for use.

3. Adjustments

  • Fence Adjustment: No adjustments are permissible on this jointer. The fence is fixed at square (90 degrees) to the table surface.

  • Depth Of Cut: No adjustments for depth of cut on this jointer. DOC is fixed at 1/32”

  • Maintenance Reporting: Any adjustments or maintenance issues should be reported immediately to the Monitor on Duty and the Maintenance Team.

4. Common Mistakes

  • Inappropriate Material Size: Avoid joining wood that is too small, thin, or short.

  • Kickbacks: Often caused by improper control of the material.

  • Failure to Use Push Sticks: Essential for safety and control.

  • Material Sniping: When guiding material along the fence, do not apply downward pressure at the end, as this can create a "snipe" once the material moves past the infeed table.

5. Limitations

  • Table Width: The table has a 12-inch width, and the cutting blade is approximately 10 inches wide.

  • Cutting Depth: The cutting depth is fixed at 1/32 inch. For deeper cuts, make multiple passes.

6. Usage Instructions

  • Pre-Check: Inspect the material to ensure there are no foreign objects that could damage the Jointer blades.

  • Unlocking: Contact the Monitor to remove the lock.

  • Vacuum System:

    • Ensure the Central Vacuum System is on.

    • Open the Central Vacuum gate.

  • Starting the Jointer:

    • Before pressing the Green 'On' button, turn the Red 'Off' button clockwise until the red light turns off.

    • Begin feeding the material. Use a push stick if needed, especially when nearing the blade.

    • Keep all clothing and body parts clear of the table and blade.

  • Avoid Sniping: As you approach the end of the material, apply pressure to the front while pushing from the back to prevent sniping.

  • Repetition: Repeat the process until you achieve a satisfactory result.

  • Shutting Down:

    • Turn the Jointer off.

    • Close the Vacuum gate.

    • Clean all areas around the Jointer, including the feed table and floor.

    • Replace the lock.
